Our Parish

Our Vocation. Our Happiness. Our Mission.

We are a people who believe in one God, the Father almighty, in one Lord Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit, and one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. This is our vocation and mission and happiness. This vocation is open to all people and all are called to it.

God the Father loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life (John 3:16). We share this saving truth, because this is our happiness and mission. (1 John 1: 1-4).

The mission of Christ and the Holy Spirit is brought to completion in the Church, which is the Body of Christ and the Temple of the Holy Spirit. This joint mission henceforth brings Christ’s faithful to share in his communion with the Father in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit prepares men and goes out to them with his grace, in order to draw them to Christ. The Spirit manifests the risen Lord to them, recalls his word to them and opens their minds to the understanding of his Death and Resurrection. He makes present the mystery of Christ, supremely in the Eucharist, in order to reconcile them, to bring them into communion with God, that they may “bear much fruit (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 737).

God’s wisdom and goodness “needs our help” that we may be his free and reasonable instruments in the world that is hungry and thirsty, and struggles with spiritual depression. Jesus Christ, presented by the Catholic Church, is the heavenly Physician and medication. He is our happiness.

At the end of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus says to his Apostles: ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’. (Matthew 28:18-19)

This is often referred to as ‘The Great Commission’ and it is still the mission of the Church to fulfil this task – to make disciples (teach) in order to baptise and so to confer the power to become children of God who are born of God (John 1: 12-13), that they may love and so find happiness and peace. (1 John 1:4; Catechism, 783-786)

That is why Jesus also says: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself (Mark 12:29), and If you love me you will keep my commandments (John 14:15).

This is our vocation, happiness, and mission. In our times, this has been referred to as the ‘New Evangelisation’, the need to spread the gospel to a world that has increasingly never heard it proclaimed. This is certainly the case in the UK and in our own diocese to which our Parish of St John the Evangelist belongs. As Bishop Richard wrote: ‘The Church in this country finds herself in a very significant moment. Many have described society as ‘post-Christian’ or ‘post-religious.’ This presents the Church with both a challenge and a significant opportunity.’

No one is excluded from this liberating and saving vocation, happiness and mission.
