Rite of Christian Initiation
RCIA Course – the parish now offers a brief course to enquirers who are 18 and above.
RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. This is the process by which adults can enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. The RCIA course covers aspects the Catholic Faith and seeks to lead enquirers to a deeper relationship with Jesus and his Church. Essentially it is a journey of faith.
The Rite is for those who are not baptised, or for those who have already been baptised in another Christian denomination, and who are also considering becoming a member of the Catholic Church. For those who are not baptised, completion of the RCIA would lead to the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist), usually at Easter. For those who are already baptised, completion of the RCIA would lead to the completion of the Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation, Eucharist) at an appropriate time.
The RCIA is not a ‘course’ but rather a journey of faith which will vary according to the individual circumstances. The Sacraments are only administered when the person is ready to assume the duties of a member of the Catholic Church.
How do I start? Making an enquiry commits you to nothing. However, if you are interested in becoming a Catholic then you are invited first to make an appointment with the Parish Priest through the Parish Office. He will then suggest you join the next RCIA Course.
Do I have to make a commitment to come to every RCIA Meeting? The expectation is that genuine enquirers will come to all the talks, in order that a truly informed decision can be made.
